Libya, EU Sign Deal on Infectious Disease ControlThe Libyan Government and the European Commission signed a Memorandum on 23 July 2007 according to which the Commission will provide medical assistance to the children victims of the HIV/AIDS infection in Benghazi, will assist Libya in establishing a national strategy against HIV/AIDS and will make its best efforts to turn the Benghazi Centre for Infectious Diseases and Immunology (BCIDI) into a regional excellence centre.
On their part, the Libyan authorities will widen the coverage of the Action Plan to all cooperation activities in the health sector, which are currently under preparation, between the European Commission and the Government of Libya in the area of Infectious Disease Control.
The Libyan authorities and European Commission agreed to continue cooperation on the HIV/AIDS Action Plan. They will also start the implementation of a wider Libyan-European Partnership for Infectious Disease Control, and support the development and implementation of a National HIV/AIDS Strategy in Libya.
The corresponding contracts, which are funded by the European Commission, will be handled by the Delegation of the European Commission to Libya, based in Tunis, according to the applicable regulations and procedures of the European Commission.
This agreement will enter into force when signed by the representative of the Ministry of foreign affairs.
